The Weekend/ El fin de semana

Este fin de semana tuvimos dos picnics con la familia--uno ayer en casa de mi tía W y uno hoy en el parque. Además del día de Recordación, estábamos celebrando la graduación de mi prima B que terminó sus estudios de la enfermería. Siempre hay mucha gente cuando nos reunimos todos de la familia. Mi mamá y sus cinco hermanas tienen la costumbre de sacarse una foto cada vez que están todas juntas. Hoy me pidieron que les sacara una foto con su papá, mi abuelo. Mi abuelo sí es veterano de la segunda guerra mundial. Era piloto.

This weekend we had two family picnics--one yesterday at my Aunt W's house and one today at the park. In addition to Memorial Day, we were celebrating my cousin B's graduation. She just finished her nursing studies. There are always a lot of people when the whole family gets together. My mom and her five sisters have started a tradition of taking "sister photos" whenever they're all together. Today they asked me to take a picture of them with their father, my grandpa. My grandpa is a World War II veteran. He was a bomber pilot.

Another Visit with G and the Kittens/ Otra visita con G y las gatitas

Hoy fui otra vez a casa de mi hermana para pasar tiempo con ella y las gatitas. Ya que una gatita va a ser mía, quiero que me conozcan. G dice las gatitas se portaron muy bien para el veterinario ayer. Sí, son dos hembras. Tienen 5-6 semanas de edad y son muy saludables. Las dos gatitas están comiendo más comida y menos leche todos los días.

Today I went to my sister's house again to spend time with her and the kittens. Since one of the kittens is going to be mine, I like for them to get to know me. G said that the kittens did very well for the vet yesterday. Yes, they´re two girl kittens. They´re 5-6 weeks old and are very healthy. Both kittens are eating more food and less milk every day.

Kitten Update/ Lo nuevo de las gatitas

¡Están creciendo, corriendo, trepándose, jugando, y comiendo! Y creemos que son dos gatitas hembras. Vamos a ver... G piensa llevarlas al veterinario esta semana. ¡Casi no puedo esperar traerme una a casa! Todavía están tomando un poco de leche del biberoncito.

They're growing, running, climbing, playing, and eating! And we think that they're both female. We'll see... G plans to take them to the vet this week. I can hardly wait to bring one home! They're still taking some milk from the little bottle.

Watching Seeds Grow.../ Observando las semillas crecer...

Mi hermanito está aprendiendo cómo crecen las semillas. Fue la idea de mi papá. Mi hermanito tiene un envase de plástico con varias esponjas mojadas. Colocó encima de esas esponjas muchas semillas de sandía (melón) y de tomate. Cuando se abran las semillas, va a sembrar las plantitas en unos tiestos y finalmente en un huerto. Mi hermano está muy emocionado por las semillas. ¡Que linda manera de aprender del diseño de Dios para el crecimiento de las plantas! ¡Tenemos un Creador maravilloso!

My little brother is learning how seeds grow. It was my dad´s idea. My brother has a plastic container with several wet sponges. On top of those sponges, he placed many tomato and watermelon seeds. When the seeds sprout, he´s going to plant them in some pots and finally in a garden. My brother is very excited about the seeds. What a great way to learn about God´s design for plants! We have a wonderful Creator!

Settling In.../ Echando raíces...

Ya este jueves hará un mes desde que salí de Borinquen. ¡Qué rápido se va el tiempo! Al principio de este mes tuve muchos viajes, y ahora es que me estoy sintiendo más en casa, con más energía, y con más ganas de echar raíces aquí en la "tierra de las nevadas".

This Thursday will already be one month since I left Borinquen. The time goes by so fast! At the beginning of this month, I did a lot of traveling, and now I´m beginning to feel more at home, more energized, and more looking forward to getting established here in "Blizzard Land."

¿Qué he estado haciendo? Gracias a Dios, ya he podido hacer varias cosas pequeñas pero esenciales como abrir una cuenta en un banco local y cambiar mi residencia. Fue lindo tener a mi papá conmigo en algunas de esas diligencias. Actualmente, estoy buscando trabajo y enviando resumés. Encontré una plaza con una agencia estatal que me interesó mucho porque necesitan a alguien que hable español y porque el trabajo parece ser algo que yo puedo hacer. Pienso enviar el paquete y la solicitud el miércoles.

What have I been doing? Thank the Lord, I have already been able do several small but necessary things, such as opening a bank account and changing my residency. It was so nice to have my dad with me on some of those outings. Currently, I am looking for work and sending out resumés. I found one position that really interested me because they need someone who can speak Spanish and because the work seems to be something that I can do. I plan to send the packet and the application on Wednesday.

Habiendo dicho eso, todavía tengo muchas horas en casa hasta que consiga trabajo. Quiero ver todo este tiempo como una oportunidad de ayudar a mi familia y de ocuparme en proyectos que hacía mucho tiempo que yo quería hacer. Un proyecto es coser una colcha hecha de mis camisetas de la universidad. Otro quizás será ayudar a mi mamá a empezar un huerto pequeño. También he disfrutado de asistir a los cultos de iglesia y pasar tiempo con mi hermana y algunas amistades.

Having said that, I still have a lot of time at home until I find work. I want to view this time as an opportunity to help my family and to get busy on projects that I have wanted to do for a long time. One project is to sew a quilt made from my college t-shirts. Another project might be to help my mom start a small garden. I have also enjoyed attending church meetings and spending time with my sister and some friends.

Kittens and Calves/ Gatitos y Becerritos

Hoy pasé el día con mi hermana G. Fue la primera vez que vi la finca donde ella y L viven. Nos divertimos mucho. (La finca no es de ellos, pero alquilan el segundo piso de la casa en la finca.) Ella me enseñó los becerritos de un año y les dimos de comer. Muchos de esos becerritos serán hamburguesas dentro de poco, pero G les ha dado nombres a casi todos. La becerrita en las fotos se llama "Pet". Pet no va a ser hamburguesa, sino que fue escogida para ser mamá cuando crezca.

Today I spent the day with my sister G. It was the first time that I saw the farm where she and L live. We had a lot of fun. (The farm´s not theirs, but they rent the second floor of the farmhouse.) She showed me the yearling calves, and we fed them. Many of those calves will be hamburgers soon, but G has named almost all of them. The calf in the pictures is named "Pet." Pet is not going to be hamburger but rather is destined to be a mama cow when she grows up.

Viviendo en el campo, siempre hay muchos animalitos. La suegra de mi hermana encontró estos dos gatitos (que eran de una gata feral), y G los está criando para que se queden bien domesticados y mansos. Creemos que tienen más o menos 4 semanas de edad. G les da leche de cabra en un biberoncito pequeño. Ya saben ir al baño, y se nota que son dos gatitos bien amigables y juguetones. Uno ronronea mucho cuando la gente lo carga. ¡Lo mejor es que uno de los gatitos es mío! G les llama "Sneaker" y "Tissue" a los gatitos aunque esos nombres van a cambiar.

Living in the country, there are always a lot of little animals. My sister´s mother-in-law found these two kittens (which belonged to a feral mother cat), and G is raising them so that they´ll be tame and gentle. We think they´re about 4 weeks old. G feeds them goat´s milk in a tiny bottle. They already know how to use the litter box, and it´s evident that they are two friendly, playful kittens. One purrs a lot when people hold him. The best of all is that one of the kittens is mine! G calls the kittens "Sneaker" and "Tissue" although those names will change.

A Week with Some Dear Friends/ Una semana con unas queridas amistades

Ya que mi hermano estudiò en la misma universidad que yo, decidì a aprovechar la semana antes de su graduaciòn para visitar a unas amigas. Hacìa dos años que nosotras no nos habìamos visto. Me quedè en el dormitorio con mi amiga J y pasè mucho tiempo con ella y una amiga H (y muchas otras). El lunes, pude asistir a la fiesta de cumpleaños de H. El jueves, nosotras salimos a un jardìn botànico donde sacamos muchas fotos y H y yo tocamos nuestras flautas dulces. Durante la semana, tambièn disfrutè de cantar en español con J y en turco con H.

Since my brother studied at the same college that I did, I decided to take advantage of the week before his graduation to visit some friends. It had been two years since my friends and I had seen each other. I stayed in the dorm with my friend J and spent a lot of time with her and a friend H (and many others). On Monday, I was able to go to H´s birthday party. On Thursday, we went to a botanical garden where we took a lot of pictures, and H and I played our recorders. During the week, I also enjoyed singing Spanish songs with J and Turkish songs with H.

My Brother´s Graduation/ La graduaciòn de mi hermano

Mi hermano T se graduò de la universidad el 8 de mayo con un bachillerato en la teologìa y la exposiciòn bìblica. Mis papàs, mi hermana A con su novio K y yo pudimos asistir a su graduaciòn. Disfrutamos mucho juntos y nos sentìamos felices por el èxito de mi hermano T. Ahora, mi hermano piensa mudarse a un pueblo màs pequeño para ayudar con una campaña evangelìstica.

My brother T graduated from college on May 8 with a bachelor´s degree in Bible Theology and Exposition. My parents, my sister A with her boyfriend K, and I were able to attend his graduation. We all enjoyed our time together and were very happy for my brother´s success. Now, my brother plans to move to a smaller town to help with an evangelistic campaign.

A Day in the Country/ Un dìa en el campo

El 1 de mayo pasè un dìa divertido con una buena amiga A. A es la cuñada de mi hermana G y vive bien en el campo, cerca de la casa de G y L. Por la tarde dimos una vuelta de la cuadra (2.4 millas). Fue tan lindo platicar con ella y orar juntas.

On May 1, I spent a fun day with a good friend A. A happens to be my sister G´s sister-in-law, and she lives in the countryside close to G and L´s house. In the afternoon, we took a walk around the block (2.4 miles). It was so good to talk with her and to pray together.

Al caminar yo me maravillaba de todo el ESPACIO que habìa. Puerto Rico es una isla relativamente pequeña con 4 millones de habitantes, y yo vivìa en una ciudad bastante grande. Yo estaba acostumbrada a las calles estrechas, las casas pequeñas con poco patio, los edificios altos de muchos apartamentos, los tapones de tràfico, y los negocios que llegan casi hasta la orilla de la calle. En toda esa caminata de 2.4 millas, A y yo vimos quizàs 5 o 6 carros. Aquì en los E.U. uno casi puede dar por sentado que una casa tendrà patio. En otras partes del mundo, tener un patio podrìa ser lujo.

While we were walking, I was amazed by all the SPACIOUSNESS that there was. Puerto Rico is a relatively small island with 4 million inhabitants, and I lived in a rather large city. I was used to narrow streets, small houses with very little yard, tall apartment buildings, traffic jams, and businesses that almost come up to the edge of the street. During that walk of 2.4 miles, A and I saw perhaps 5 or 6 cars. Here in the U.S., a person could almost take for granted that a house will have a yard. In other parts of the world, to have a yard could be a luxury.
