7-8 Days/Dias

No se por que pero ahora mismo no me dejan escribir con los acentos...

Bueno, estas son algunas fotos del martes cuando los pollitos cumplieron 7 u 8 dias de edad. Ya se les estan creciendo sus alitas y, segun mi mama, se parecen mas a pajaritos que a pollitos. Me hace darme cuenta del Creador tan sabio que es nuestro Dios que se les crezcan primero las plumas de las alas a los pajaritos. El vuelo es casi su unica proteccion.

Tambien, yo los transferi a una jaula mas grande. Los pollitos ya estan mucho mas grandes y empezando a brincar y extender sus alitas.

Well, these are some pictures from Tuesday when the little chicks turned 7 or 8 days old. Their wing feathers are already growing in, and, according to my mom, they're looking more like little birds than like chicks. It makes me realize what a wise Creator God is that the little birds would grow their wing feathers first. Flight is almost their only protection against predators.

Also, I transferred them to a larger cage. The chiclets are now much bigger and beginning to jump and extend their little wings.

Friends/Amigas

Hoy el sábado mi amiga A vino a almorzar y a pasar unas horas conmigo en mi apartamento. Jugamos un juego de Yahtzee antes de comer y las dos tiramos un "Yahtzee" (todos los dados con el mismo número). Después de almorzar, fuimos a caminar en la vecindad y vimos pasar un tren en el ferrocarril al final de la calle. Entonces, al fin de la visita, A y yo pudimos orar juntas. Gracias, Señor, por buenas amistades.

Today my friend A came to have lunch and spend a few hours with me in my apartment. We played a game of Yahtzee and both of us rolled a "Yahtzee" (all the dice with the same number). After lunch, we went on a walk through the neighborhood and saw a train go by on the railroad at the end of the street. Then, at the end of the visit, A and I got to pray together. Thank you, Lord, for good friends.

The Chiclets in Order/Los pollitos en orden

Los pollitos ya tienen dos o tres días de edad. Se están engordando y se ven tan suavecitos y tiernos con toda su pelusa. Quería sacarles a cada uno un retrato antes que esa dulce pelusa se vuelva en plumas. Dios es tan creativo con su creación. Me gustan todos estos colores.

The Chiclets are now two or three days old. They're getting chubby and look so cute and soft with all their soft down. I wanted to take a picture of each one of them before that sweet down turns into feathers. God is so creative with His creation. I love all these colors.

Chiclet/Pollito #1:
Es el mayor (o la mayor) de los siete y el más pequeño. Éste es el pollito que oí piar dentro de su huevo. También, es el más activo de todos.

He (or she) is the oldest and the smallest of the seven. This was the chick that I heard peeping inside his egg. He is also the most active.

Chiclet/Pollito #2:
Éste nació mientras que yo me estaba duchando. Llegué justo cuando estaba empujando para salir del huevo.

This one hatched while I was taking a shower. I arrived just in time to see him pushing himself out of the egg.

Chiclet/Pollito #3:
Yo vi a éste y al cuarto salir de sus huevos. Nacieron casi al mismo tiempo y los considero "gemelos".

I saw this one and the fourth one hatch. They hatched at almost the same time, and I consider them "twins."

Chiclets/Pollitos #'s 4, 5:
Los dos amarillos. No sé cuál es cuál. El quinto nació de noche cuando yo estaba durmiendo.

The two yellow ones. I don't know which is which. The fifth one hatched at night while I was sleeping.

Chiclet/Pollito #6:
Este es muy especial para mí. Es el único que nació de un huevo azul, y era el que creía que no iba a nacer porque hizo un rotito y no nacía. La mañana siguiente todavía estaba en su huevo. Me sentí tan mal y oré por este pollito. Entonces, mientras que yo estaba desayunando, salió. Este también es el más amigable de los siete y le gusta sentarse en nuestras manos.

This one is very special for me. It's the only one to hatch from a blue egg, and it was the one I thought wasn't going to hatch because it made a little hole and wasn't coming out. The next morning it was still in its egg. I felt so badly and prayed for this little chick. Then, while I was eating breakfast, it hatched. This is also the friendliest and the cuddliest of the seven and likes to sit on our hands.

Chiclet/Pollito #7:
El bebé de la familia. También es el más nervioso, pero lo quiero mucho. Se parece mucho a los amarillos, pero tiene unas plumas más oscuras en su espalda.

The baby of the family. He's also the most nervous, but I love him. He looks a lot like the yellow ones but has some darker feathers on his rump.

11 Weeks/Semanas

Mi querido sobrino P está creciendo y cambiando mucho. ¡El lunes tuvo una cita médica y pesó más de 16 libras! Ya pesa casi el doble de su peso de nacimiento. P se sonríe mucho y está empezando a darse la vuelta. G también me dijo que P ya duerme de las 10:00 hasta las 5:00 durante la noche.

Este día (el martes) hacía mucho calor y todos estábamos sudando. Por eso P tiene puesto solamente su pañal.

My precious nephew P is growing and changing so much. On Monday he had a doctor appointment and weighed more than 16 pounds! He already weighs almost twice his birth weight. P is smiling a lot now and beginning to roll over. G also told me that P is now sleeping from 10:00 until 5:00 during the night.

This day (Tuesday) it was quite hot and all of us were sweating. That's why P only has a diaper on.

The "Chiclets"

Gracias a mi cuñado L por sugerir que esta "ganga" de pollitos necesitaba un nombre. G pensó en el nombre "Chiclets" porque en inglés suena como pollitos miniaturas. Como ven, nacieron varios más desde ayer. Ya son siete, y me encanta que casi todos se vean diferentes. Los únicos que no sé distinguir son los dos amarillos. (Hay un tercer amarillo, pero ése tiene algunas plumas más oscuras.) Quedan cinco huevos en la incubadora, pero ya han pasado varias horas desde que el último nació, así que vamos a ver si estos cinco nacen o no.

Thank you to my brother-in-law L for suggesting that this "gang" of button quail chicks needed a name, and thank you to G for suggesting the cute name of "Chiclets." As you can tell, many more hatched since yesterday. There are now seven, and I love that almost all of them look different. The only ones I can't tell apart are the two solid yellow ones. (There is a third yellow chick, but that one has some darker feathers as well.) There are five eggs left in the incubator, but several hours have gone by since the last chick hatched, so we'll see if these five hatch or not.

Es lindo mirar los pollitos--mirarles comer, mirarles tomar su agüita, mirarles correr, y mirarles apretándose unos contra otros para dormir. Si meto mi mano en la incubadora, los pollitos tratan de ponerse bajo mi mano como si yo fuera su mamá. También, fue un milagro absoluto poder ver a tres pollitos salir de sus huevos. Me quedo maravillada de la sabiduría y del poder creativo de nuestro Dios. ¿Cómo es que unas criaturas tan pequeñas puedan salirse solas de un huevo (¡¡y aún sobrevivir hasta la hora de poder salir de ese huevo!!)? Tiene que ser Dios quién lo diseñó.

It's so sweet to watch the chicks--to watch them eat, watch them drink their water, watch them run, and watch them snuggle together to fall asleep. If I lower my hand into the incubator, the chicks try to huddle under my hand as if I were their mama. It was also an absolute miracle to be able to watch three chicks hatch. I am just amazed at the wisdom and creative power of our God. How is it that such a tiny creature can peck its own way out of an egg (not to mention actually surviving until it's time to hatch!!)? It has to be God who designed it.

The First Chick/ El primer pollito

Esta tarde regresé del trabajo y encontré que el primer pollito había salido de su huevo. Es muy activo y siempre está piando. ¡Es muy pequeño también! Podría sentarse encima de una cuchara con espacio demás. Me dio risa mirarlo cuando todavía lo tenía en la incubadora. Estaba corriendo y empujando los otros huevos y a veces dándoles con su piquito. Tal vez, quería despertar a sus hermanitos para que salieran. Por ahora, este pollito es el único. Vamos a ver si algunos otros nacen dentro de un día o dos.

This afternoon I came home from work to find that the first chick had hatched! He (or she) is very active and peeps a lot. He is so little too! He could sit on a spoon with room to spare. It made me smile to watch him while he was still in the incubator. He was running and knocking into the other eggs and sometimes even tapping on them with his beak. Perhaps he wanted to wake his siblings up so that they would hatch too. For now, this chick is the only one that has hatched. We'll see if any more hatch within the next day or two.

The Last Couple Días/ Los últimos días

Dos o tres días antes que los pollitos salgan de sus huevos hay que dejar de rodarlos. Así que anoche los saqué de la bandeja (que los rodaba automáticamente) y los coloqué encima de una tela de goma. ¡Ya estamos esperando que nazcan! Me pregunto cuántos habrán. Mi papá cree que todos los doce. Yo pienso que la mitad. Vamos a ver...

Two or three days before the chicks hatch, the eggs no longer need to be turned. So, last night I took the eggs out of the tray (which turned them automatically) and set them on top of this rubber shelf liner. Now we're just waiting for them to hatch! I wonder how many there will be. My dad thinks that all twelve will hatch. I think maybe half of them. We'll see...

Además, Lily recibió un regalo hoy--una fuente para tomar agua. Quería comprarle uno porque me parecía muy chévere y Lily siempre está tomando agua del grifo (lo que a mí no me gusta). Creo que fue un éxito. Después de acostumbrarse, Lily pasó más de un minuto tomando agua de la fuente.

In addition, Lily got a new present today--a drinking fountain. I had wanted to buy her one because it looked cool, and Lily is always drinking water from the faucet (which I don't care for). I think it was a success. After getting used to it, Lily spent over a minute lapping water from the fountain.

Preparing the Nursery/ Preparando el criadero

Falta una semana para que los pollitos salgan de sus huevos, si Dios quiere. Una vez que se sequen completamente en la incubadora, hay que transferirlos a otro sitio un poco más grande, pero todavía calentado. Los pollitos van a necesitan el calor por varias semanas (cada semana menos calor) hasta que tengan todas sus plumas adultas. Hoy pude prepararles su "criadero".

There is only a week left before the little chicks hatch, Lord willing. Once they dry off completely in the incubator, they'll need a larger, but still heated, space. Chicks need warmth for several weeks (less warmth each week) until they have all their adult feathers. Today I got to prepare their brooder or nursery. :-)

Hay una luz para calentarlos, una puertita muy conveniente en la parte arriba de la jaula, un termómetro que, en la foto, está midiendo 95 grados Fahrenheit, y dos tapitas de lata para su agua y su comida. Yo puse unas piedritas en su tapita de agua para que no se ahoguen. En el piso de la jaula, coloqué varias capas de papel toalla y una capa de tela de goma para que puedan agarrar bien para caminar.

There is a light to heat them, a very convenient little door on top of the cage, a thermometer that is measuring 95 degrees Fahrenheit in the picture, and two jar lids for their food and water. I put some little marbles in their water lid so that they don't drown. On the floor of the cage, I put several layers of paper towel and a layer of shelf liner so that they would have good traction in order to walk.

Además, entre el sábado y hoy les compré su comida. En la foto hay una bolsa de comida para "gamebirds" que, supuestamente, es la mejor comida para los "button quail". También pueden comer las semillas para finches. Las semillas añaden un poco de variedad. (Según lo que he leído, si las semillas son su comida principal, es buena idea darles un poco de huevo hervido todos los días porque necesitan más proteína que contienen las semillas. La comida para "gamebirds" tienen mucha proteína.)

In addition, between Saturday and today I bought their food. In the picture there is a bag of gamebird crumbles which, supposedly, is the best food for button quails. They can also eat finch seeds. The seeds add a little bit of variety. (According to what I have read, if the seeds are their main food, it's a good idea to give them a little bit of hard boiled egg every day because they need more protein than the seeds provide. The gamebird crumble has a lot of protein.)

The Piano/El piano

El piano llegó a la casa durante el día ayer (el miércoles) en una caja ENORME. Más tarde mi papá y yo sacamos las piezas y las llevamos al segundo piso donde me puse a conectar las piezas y construirlo.

El piano es digital--un Casio AP 620--pero tiene 88 teclas respuestas al tacto y, al tocarlo, se parece mucho a un piano verdadero. ¡Además vino con una banqueta ajustable! Estoy feliz por poder tocar himnos y piezas de nuevo. Gracias, Señor.

The piano arrived at the house yesterday (Wednesday) during the day. Later my dad and I took the pieces out of the ENORMOUS box and carried them upstairs where I went to work connecting the parts and building the piano.

The piano is digital--a Casio AP 620--but it has 88 weighted, touch-sensitive keys and feels a lot like an acoustic piano. Also, it came with an adjustable bench! I am glad to be able to play hymns and pieces again. Thank you, Lord!

One Year Ago.../Hace un año...

Hace un año Lily vino a vivir conmigo en mi apartamento. Era muy pequeña--apenas 6 o 7 semanas de edad. A veces lloraba como una gatita bebé. Jugaba duro y dormía duro. Creo que muchas veces se sentía solita cuando tenía sueño y le gustaba que yo la cogiera. Ahora Lily se convirtió en una gata confiada y juguetona y bella. Le doy gracias a Dios por el gozo que los animalitos pueden traer a la vida de uno.

One year ago Lily came to live with me in my apartment. She was very little--only 6 or 7 weeks old. Sometimes she cried like a baby kitten. She played hard and slept hard. I think that she often felt lonely when she was sleepy and wanted me to hold her while she fell asleep. Now Lily has become a confident, playful, beautiful cat. I am very thankful to the Lord for the joy that little animals can bring to one's life.

Memorial Day Weekend/ El fin de semana del Día de Conmemoración

El fin de semana pasado pude tomar unos días de vacación para viajar a visitar a varios amigos que hacía tres años que no nos veíamos. Además, pude asistir a un retiro de la iglesia en la cual yo crecí. Fue un fin de semana MARAVILLOSO. Me encantó verlos a todos. Hay demasiado para contar, así es que voy a mencionar sólo algunas experiencias e impresiones sobresalientes.

Last weekend I was able to take some vacation days to travel to visit some friends whom I haven't seen in three years. In addition, I was able to attend a retreat with the church that I grew up in. It was a WONDERFUL weekend. I loved seeing everyone. There is too much to tell, so I'm just going to mention a few of the highlights.

1. Encontrándome con mi hermana A en el mall y comiendo "stromboli"/ Meeting up with my sister A at the mall and eating stromboli

2. Pasando la noche en casa de unos amigos de la iglesia. Fue una linda visita y dormí muy bien. Un viaje en carro de 7-8 horas cansa a uno./ Spending the night at some friends' house. It was a sweet visit, and I slept very well. Driving 7-8 hours makes one very tired.

3. Visiting my Uncle D and Aunt A in their home/ Visitando a mi tío D y mi tía A en su casa

4. Mirando cantar en la noche de talentos a las niñas (ya crecidas) que antes yo tenía en mi clase de escuela dominical/ Watching the girls from my former Sunday school class (now grown up) sing in the talent show

5. Mirando jugar al sófbol como un profesional a un niño que era muy pequeño cuando yo asistía a esa iglesia/ Watching a boy, who was very little when I attended that church, play softball like a pro

6. Mirando tocar una sonatina a otra muchacha (que era estudiante mía de la escuela dominical)/ Watching another girl (also a former Sunday school student) play a sonatina

7. Pasando una tarde con otra amiga y sus hijos y aprendiendo de sus vidas y sus intereses/ Spending an afternoon with another friend and her children and learning about their lives and interests

8. Jugando al "ping-pong" con mi cuñado K/ Playing ping-pong with my brother-in-law K

9. Disfrutando del juego en que teníamos que nombrar a las personas que se sentaban en ciertas sillas durante los cultos de la iglesia. ¡Algunas personas no han cambiado de asiento desde hace años!/ Enjoying the game in which we had to name the people who sat in certain seats during church services. Some people haven't changed their seats in years!

My Newest Project/ Mi nuevo proyecto

Desde los cuatro o cinco años cuando yo sacaba los huevos de la nevera para ponerlos en mi cama hasta los años en la escuela primaria cuando mi papá nos ayudaba a construir varias incubadoras para tratar de criar unos patitos o pollitos, siempre he deseado poder incubar unos huevitos y ver salir de los huevos a los pollitos. Sin embargo, hasta ahora no hemos tenido éxito. Una vez, un solo patito empezó a salir y terminó en morir dentro del huevo. Este año decidí que quería invertir en una mejor incubadora y, si Dios quiere, observar este milagro que Dios diseñó para el nacimiento de los pajaritos bebés.

Since the age of four or five when I used to take eggs out of the refrigerator to put them in my bed and through my elementary school years when my dad used to help us build incubators to try to hatch some ducklings or chicks, I have always wanted to incubate some eggs and watch the little birds hatch. So far, however, we haven't had success. Once, a sole duckling began to hatch but ended up dying inside the egg. This year I decided to invest in a better incubator and, Lord willing, watch this miracle that God designed for the birth of little birds.

Los huevitos son de unos pajaritos "button quail." Son codornices pequeños que miden sólo 4-5 pulgadas cuando son adultos. Estos pájaros pueden comer la comida para las gallinas o para los pavos molida. Yo compré estos huevitos por la Internet. Sólo pedí seis, pero me enviaron doce. :-) Me dijeron que iban a enviar algunos adicionales por si acaso unos huevos se rompieran. Estoy muy impresionada por como los empaquetearon. Ninguno se rompió. Gracias a Dios, había espacio para todos en mi incubadora. Si todos los pollitos nacen, voy a estar tratando de encontrar unas nuevas familias para ellos.

The little eggs are from a type of bird called a "button quail." Button quails are very tiny and only grow to 4 or 5 inches long. They can eat chicken or turkey food ground up into smaller pieces. I bought these eggs online. I only ordered six, but I received twelve. :-) They told me that they would send extras in case some broke. I am very impressed by how well the eggs were packaged. Not one broke. Thankfully, there was room in the incubator for all of them. If the chicks all hatch, I will be trying to find new families for them all.

2 meses/2 months

Mi sobrino P cumplió dos meses ayer y, como ya ven, ha crecido bastante. P ya está usando ropa para bebés de 3 a 6 meses de edad. P ya sabe sonreír y le gusta mirarnos. G le dijo a mi mamá que hoy P estaba mirando sus juguetes por primera vez y sonriendo. Estoy feliz por vivir cerca para poder verle crecer.

My nephew P had his two-month birthday yesterday, and, as you can tell, he has grown a lot! P is already using 3-6 months clothing. P now knows how to smile, and he likes to look at us. G told my mom that P was looking at his toys today for the first time and smiling. I am happy to live so close so that I can watch him grow.
