My little brother's program/ El programa de mi hermanito

Desde el otoño, la escuela de t (y varias otras escuelas en el estado) han estado preparando para este gran programa especial de patinar sobre hielo. Me encantó ver a los estudiantes patinar y presentar sus programas. ¡Han trabajado tanto para hacerlo! Cuando entró la clase de t, todos gritamos y llamamos su nombre. Ellos patinaron a la música de Los Piratas del Caribe, y t era un pirata.

Since fall, t's school (and several other schools in the states) have been getting ready for this big special ice skating program. I loved seeing the students skate and present their programs. They've all worked so hard for it! When t's class entered the rink, we all cheered and called his name. They skated to the music of Pirates of the Caribbean, and t was a pirate.

39 weeks/ 39 semanas

Hoy G cumplió su semana 39 de embarazo, y ellos dos (G y L) tienen algo nuevo en su carro--el asiento para el bebé que va a nacer. Sé que apreciarían mucho sus oraciones ahora que se acerca el nacimiento de su hijo(a), y yo estoy muy emocionada por ser titi, si Dios quiere, dentro de las dos próximas semanas. (La doctora quiere que el bebé nazca antes del 10 de abril.)

Today G is 39 weeks pregnant, and the two of them (G and L) have something new in their car--the carseat for the baby that is about to be born. I know that they would really appreciate your prayers now that their son or daughter's birth is so near, and I am very excited about being a "titi" (auntie), Lord willing, within the next two weeks. (The doctor doesn't want her to go past April 10.)

Winter-Spring/ Invierno-Primavera

Nevó el martes pasado--¡en marzo! Sin embargo, estoy disfrutando de esta época de transición--una batalla entre el invierno y la primavera--y poco a poco la primavera sale ganando.

It snowed last Tuesday--in March! Nevertheless, I am enjoying this transitional season--a battle between winter and spring--and little by little spring comes out winning.

Baby Blue/ Azulito

Ayer hice algo que nunca había hecho. Compré un carro nuevo--un Hyundai Accent 2011. Me gusta mucho y le doy gracias a Dios por mi carro viejo, por el tiempo que ése me sirvió, y por poder comprar este carro ahora cuando necesitaba encontrar otro vehículo. El sábado me enteré de que mi carro viejo requería unas reparaciones caras. Como el carro ya tenía 13 años, mi papá y yo creíamos que seria mejor usar ese dinero para comprar otro en vez de repararlo. Yo ya había estado pensando en comprar un carro más nuevo en algún momento y encontramos que los carros de 2009 y 2010 no costaban mucho menos que los del 2011. Además los Hyundai Accent, que son bastante económicos (pero lindos), estaban en especial y tenían una garantía larga de 5 años, así que resultó que compré mi primer carro nuevo. Tengo que decir que es muy diferente y muy divertido poder ir al "dealer" y escoger el carro por el color. :-)

Yesterday I did something that I had never done before. I bought a new car--a Hyundai Accent 2011. I like it a lot and I thank the Lord for my old car, for the time it served me, and for being able to buy this one now that I needed to find another vehicle. On Saturday, I found out that my old car required some costly repairs. Since the car was 13 years old, my dad and I thought that it would be better to use that money to buy another instead of to repair it. I had been thinking about buying a newer car at some point, and we found that the 2009 and 2010 cars didn't really cost much less than the 2011 cars. In addition, the Hyundai Accents, which are rather economical cars (but pretty!), were on sale and had a long 5-year warranty, so the end result was that I bought my first new car. I have to say that it is very different and fun to go to the dealer and choose a car based on its color. :-)

With Grandma/ Con abuela

Les presento a mi abuela L. Ella nos invitó a G y a mí a comer en Panera y estaba tan emocionada por pasar tiempo con "sus nietas". G y yo disfrutamos de escucharla contar sus historias de la vida. Aprendimos que nuestra abuela estaba orando por un "hombre cristiano", y que cuando nuestros abuelos eran novios, nuestro abuelo le regalaba muñequitas que compraba en una tienda pequeña. Aprendimos que ellos dos se casaron sólo tres meses después de conocerse y que viajaron a Puerto Rico, Disney World y Alemania en el primer año de su matrimonio. ¡Qué luna de miel! Aprendimos de algunos gozos y tristezas de nuestra abuela y crecimos en aprecio y agradecimiento por los abuelos que Dios nos dio. Te quiero, abuela. Gracias por el almuerzo, pero aún más por tu amor y tu amor por Cristo.

Meet my Grandma L. She invited G and me to eat at Panera and was so excited to spend time with "her granddaughters." G and I enjoyed listening to life stories. We learned that our grandma was praying for a "Christian man," and that, when our grandparents were going out, our grandpa used to give her little dolls that he bought at a small store. We learned that they got married only three months after they met and that they traveled to Puerto Rico, Disney World, and Germany in their first year of marriage. Talk about a honeymoon! We learned about some of my grandma's joys and her sadnesses, and we grew in appreciation and gratitude for the grandparents that God gave us. I love you, Grandma. Thank you for lunch, but thank you more for your love and for your love for Jesus.

The Cultures of Blizzard Land/ Las culturas de la tierra de las nevadas grandes

Una cosa que he notado durante mi tiempo en la tierra de las nevadas es que mucha gente aquí es muy conectada a su herencia. También he tenido el privilegio de conocer a varios imigrantes de la primera generación--imigrantes de Alemania, Polonia, Italia, Grecia, Rusia, Inglaterra, y otros sitios. Disfruto de aprender sobre cada una de esas culturas.

One thing I have noticed during my time here in Blizzard Land is that many people here are very connected to their heritage. I have also had the privilege to meet several first generation immigrants--immigrants from Germany, Poland, Italy, Greece, Russia, England, and other places. I enjoy learning about each one of these cultures.

Este mes, por casualidad, fui invitada a comer dos veces en un restaurante polaco. Hasta este año, yo nunca había comido en ningún restaurante así y no sabía casi nada de Polonia excepto que Chopin era medio polaco, mi entrenador de balompié era de allí, y la esposa de él tocaba el chelo. Esta semana pude probar un postre polaco llamado "punchki" que se supone que se coma el día antes del miércoles de ceniza. Que creativo es nuestro Dios y que maravilloso es aprender de otras culturas en el mundo que El hizo.

This month, I just happened to be invited twice to eat at a Polish restaurant. Until this year, I had never eaten in any restaurant like that, and I hardly knew anything about Poland except that Chopin was half Polish, my soccer coach was from there, and my coach's wife played the cello. This week, I also tried a Polish pastry called "punchki" that is supposed to be eaten the day before Ash Wednesday. How creative is our God and how wonderful it is to learn about other cultures in the world that He has made!

An Inspiration from A's in-laws/ Una inspiración de los suegros de A

No solamente disfruté de conocer a la familia de K (el esposo de A) cuando ellos vinieron a visitar en diciembre, sino que también me acuerdo de ellos cada vez que como mi cereal con leche por la mañana. Sí, yo ya soy una de esas personas que toma leche de soya en vez de leche de vaca. Yo no era así, sino que empezó con la visita de los suegros de A. Explicaré...

Not only did I enjoy meeting K's (A's husband's) family, but I also get to remember them every time I eat my cereal with milk in the morning. Yes, I am now "one of those people" who drinks soy milk instead of cow's milk. I was not always that way, but it all started when A's in-laws came to visit. I will explain...

Como una mujer soltera, siempre he tenido dificultad en terminar un cartón de leche antes que se perdiera. Además, aparte de mi cereal no tomo mucha leche. (No se preocupen por el falto de calcio porque casi todos los días estoy comiendo yogurt.) Yo tenía dos opciones--o comprar un medio galón de leche que era más barato pero que, a lo mejor, no terminaría o comprar un cuarto que era más caro y que sí terminaría. Resultaba que yo botaba mucha leche, y no me gustaba malgastarla así.

As a single woman, I have always had trouble finishing a carton of milk before it went sour. Furthermore, apart from my cereal, I really don't drink much milk. (Don't worry about my lack of calcium because I eat yogurts every day.) I had two options--either buy a half gallon, which was cheaper but I probably wouldn't finish, or buy a quart, which was more expensive but I would finish. The result was that I ended up wasting a lot of milk, and I didn't like that at all.

Mi inspiración de empezar a tomar leche de soya vino de los suegros de A cuando estaba haciendo compras para hospedarlos aquí y me enteré de que tomaba leche de soya. Después de su visita, me quedé con un poco de esa leche en mi nevera, y ¡me gustó! Honestamente, mi decisión de cambiar a leche de soya fue una de mera conveniencia porque dura más tiempo en la nevera que la leche de vaca. Aún mejor, se vende en el supermercado de comidas económicas cerca de mi casa. Estoy feliz por ya resolver el dilema de la leche y también porque me siento que esté haciendo algo saludable.

Y no se preocupen si jamás visito a algunos de ustedes. Todavía tomo leche de vaca. :-)

My inspiration to switch to soy milk came from A's in-laws when I was going shopping to host them here and I found out that they drank soy milk. After their visit, some of the milk was left in the refrigerator, and I liked it! Honestly, my decision to switch to soy milk was one of sheer convenience because it lasts longer in the refrigerator than cow's milk. Even better, it's sold in the discount supermarket near my house. I'm happy about finally solving the "milk dilemma" and also because I feel like I'm doing something healthy for myself.

And don't worry if I ever visit some of you all. I still do drink cow's milk. :-)
