4 1/2 weeks and growing up!/ 4 1/2 semanas y aprendiendo a ser grandes

Esta semana los cinco pollitos aprendieron algo muy importante--a tomar agua de una botellita. Ya es mucho más fácil mantenerles suficiente agua limpio. Me hace feliz escuchar el sonido de sus piquitos tocando la pelotita de metal para sacar agua de la botella.

This week the five chicks learned something very important--how to drink water from a bottle. It is now MUCH easier to have enough clean water available for them. I smile whenever I hear the sound of their little beaks pecking at the little metal ball to drink the water.

También, desde la última vez que escribí, yo les compré una casita y puse la otra rampa y tercer nivel en su jaula. Es lindo verles subir y bajar y entrar a su casa. Les gusta dormir en el segundo nivel en frente de (no dentro de) su casa.

Also, since the last time that I wrote, I bought them a little house and put up the other ramp and third level in their cage. It's so fun to watch them go up and down the ramps and into their house. They like to sleep on the second level in front of (not inside) their house.

Por ahora, me quedan cinco pollitos porque vendí dos la semana pasada. Posiblemente, los vendo o regalo todos eventualmente, pero quisiera verle a una poner un huevo. Sé que uno es macho, el dorado que tiene las rayitas negras y blancas en su cuello, pero no estoy completamente segura de los demás.

For now, there are five little chicks left because I sold two last week. I may sell them all or give them away eventually, but I'd kind of like to see one of them lay an egg first :-). I know that one of them is a male (the golden one with the black and white stripes on his neck), but I am not completely sure of the rest.

3 Weeks/Semanas

Los Button Quail cumplieron tres semanitas hoy. Les gusta "bañarse" en la arena y subir la rampa en su jaula. Tienen más plumas y el sábado yo apagué la luz que les calentaba. Mañana dos de los pollitos van a su nueva casa.

The Button Quail turned three weeks old today. They like to dustbathe in their little sandbox and climb the ramp in their cage. They have more feathers now, and, on Saturday, I turned off their heat lamp. Tomorrow, two of the chicks will be going to their new home.

Esa fue la temperatura que midió nuestro termómetro roto en este día caluroso del verano. :-)

Nosotros disfrutamos de una visita de G, L y P. Vinieron ayer y se quedaron la noche en casa. Hoy mi papá y L se ocuparon en hacer proyectos en la casa. Construyeron unos estantes en la cocina de mi mamá, instalaron la moldura en el cuarto de mis papás, colgaron un espejo en mi cuarto, y cortaron un estante que estaba en el "closet" de la cocina mía. Para el almuerzo, mi mamá hizo una muy buena comida a la parrilla afuera. Yo también disfruté de ver a mi sobrino. P cumplió tres meses ayer y está empezando a agarrar sus juguetes y traerlos a su boquita.

That's what our broken thermometer outside was reading on this hot summer day. :-)

We enjoyed a visit from G, L, and P. They came yesterday and stayed overnight. Today my dad and L were busy doing projects at home. They built some shelves in the kitchen for my mom, installed the molding in my parents' bedroom, hung a mirror in my room, and shortened a shelf that was in my kitchen closet. For lunch, my mom cooked a wonderful meal on the grill. I also enjoyed seeing my nephew. P turned three months old yesterday and is beginning to grab his toys and bring them to his mouth.

The Chiclets--2 Weeks/Semanas

Hoy y mañana los pollitos cumplen dos semanas. Ya pueden volar (si se asustan), y se les notan los colores que van a ser de adultos. Siguen comiendo mucho, y cada cuánto les estoy moliendo menos finamente la comida. También empecé a mezclarles la comida con unas semillas pequeñas para los finches. Quiero que se acostumbren de las semillas también porque no sé lo que sus nuevas familias les dén de comer.

Hoy saqué la jaula del cuarto cerrado donde estaban a otro cuarto porque quiero que se acostumbren también de ver más actividad fuera de la jaula (y también de la gata). A Lily le encanta mirarlos y los pollitos no se ven preocupados (aunque claro que no la voy a dejar sola con ellos). La jaula es bastante segura y fuerte, y es importante que Lily y los pollitos aprendan a ignorarse los unos a los otros.

Today and tomorrow the chiclets turn two weeks old. They can now fly (when startled), and they are slowly "feathering" into the colors they will be as adults. The chicks eat quite a lot, and I am gradually grinding their food larger and larger. I'm also mixing their food with finch seed. I want them to get used to eating seeds because I have no idea what their new families might give them to eat.

Today I moved the cage out of the enclosed spare room to another room because I also want them to adjust to seeing more activity outside of their cage (and to seeing the cat). Lily loves to watch them, and the chiclets really don't seem phased by having her there (although I will definitely not leave her alone with them). The cage is quite secure, and I think it's important that Lily and the chicks learn to ignore each other.
